Day 49 The Sharp End of Fashion: Tell me the truth, I can see what you wear, but how about what you eat

Fashion is very much driven by visualizing what we wear. The way we wear things, the reason we put things together as we do, the places we go in different clothes, the ideas we connect our style to, the group which we belong to, the money we earn, the money we spend, our secret wishes and desires, these things are all part of the creation of our very own self-consciously or unconsciously drive to reflect what are and wish to be. We are the ones, the individuals, who make our very own fashion statement. And this rules everything, the way we display our wealth, the way we carry the clothes we wear, the idea of reflecting ourselves to be read certain ways. It is not the designers, not the highs street chains, it is us who defines our own wardrobe. We make choices based on the availability of what`s on the market and what isn`t. It is our choice to make and idea work simply by liking or not liking the silhouettes, the colours, the shapes, the patterns, the fabrics. The designers, the trend forecasters, the high street chains put a menu in front of us, just like in a restaurant and depending on our needs, deeds and desires we choose. Just as we choose what we eat, when we are hungry. And we put each other into boxes, by what we choose to wear, a lot more than by what we choose to eat. I remember when I was about 12 and me and mum were window shopping in the county town` high street and overheard a customer from a boutique who was buying a very expensive and very fashionable dress saying to the owner: `Yes it is expensive, but everybody will see this on me and nobody needs to know that I only eat bread and butter at home.`
Can you imagine if for 1 months we who make the choices would only by clothing, shoes, accessories, home furnishing and anything we need in this area from people who live within 5km from us and who are making these items from local materials with their own hands and machines. I bet those of you who are parents would pray, `please God not let this months be the one when school uniforms due to be bought. Poor kids would need to wear the old grown out yellowish shirts and socks and tights with holes on.` I am sure every single one of you, would find a way to mend the socks and tights and try to make that shirt whiter and lengthen those trousers and skirts. You would do it for your child. If you suddenly get invited to a wedding, you would no doubt find a dress in your wardrobe. If you would win a dream holiday on a cruise, I am sure you would be able to scrape together 2 massive suitcases full of clothes from your own wardrobe and family and friends. But would you take the trouble and find out if there is an artisan in your local area to have for example a little black dress or a beach bag made? Would you? What would you do if for a whole months there would be no shops open to buy any clothes at all? There would be no markets open and you would need to do without buying new stuff, full stop!
1. What would you do?
2. How would you feel?
3. What would you do with your access money?
4. What alternatives you`d come up with if you do need something new (fashion related item)?
5. Would you go for local product?
Please, do let me know what you think! Thank you!
